Grading:
While “raw” points (points based on the number of steps and/or level of difficulty of each problem) will be used to expedite the grading process, all exams will be recorded using a “straight” grading scale, ie., 100-90% = A, 89-80% = B, 79-70% = C, 69-60% = D, 59-0% = F
Your final grade in the course will be calculated using the same type of scale. Attendance and participation (or lack thereof) will also play a role on determining borderline final grades. There are no “extra” credit assignments in this course, so concentrate on the credit.
Exam Policies: For each exam in this course ...
1.) Have your pencil(s) and your calculator out before exams are handed out to the class. Rummaging through your backpack or purse during exams will be seen as cheating.
2.) There will be no sharing or loaning of calculators during exams. Calculators that can store formulas or text material in memory are subject to my inspection before exams. Cell phones may not be used for any reason.
3.) Do not take exams using an ink pen. I recommend that you do all your work in this course in pencil, but I will not grade exams taken in pen. (Everyone makes mistakes in math; that’s simply part of the learning process. However, you should erase those mistakes, not scribble them out.)
4.) There will be a specified minimum time (generally 50-60 minutes) for each exam and you will not be permitted to hand exam if you finish before the allotted exam time is over. If you finish an exam early, use your time to check your work over.
5.) Any form of cheating would result in a loss of credit for that exam, would put your status in the class at risk, and would be punished to the limits allowed by Rock Valley College.
College Policy on Academic Honesty:
The faculty and administration expect that RVC students are enrolled in courses as serious and honorable scholars. Furthermore, students are expected to do their own, original work, except when collaboration on projects is directed by faculty as part of the course or a specific assignment. Students are expected to observe the commonly accepted standards of academic honesty at all times.
Students who commit any of the forms of academic dishonesty as outlined in the RVC Student Handbook are subject to the penalties and sanctions agreed upon by the faculty and administration of Rock Valley College.
Here is what this means for in a nutshell. In cases of academic dishonesty (cheating) it will be up to me whether you fail the assignment, the exam, or the entire course. I do not take academic dishonesty lightly.
