All too often, unprepared students have decided not to show up on the day of an exam, assuming that they would be allowed to make the exam up at another time. Usually this just meant postponing the inevitable, and it was not at all fair to the others in the class.
While I need to allow for the occasional (and quite rare) emergency, the following make-up exam policy is designed to hold you to the commitment you made when you registered for this course. You will notice that it is an extremely restrictive policy, and that is quite intentional. Your best bet would be to just make sure you were here on the days we have scheduled exams.
If an emergency arises and you must miss one of the exams, a make-up exam will be provided for you if you meet all of the following requirements.
1.) Previous attendance and participation must be acceptable to me. If I feel that you have been excessively absent prior to the exam you need to make up (absences greater than or equal to the credit hours of the course), then you will not be given the opportunity to take a make up exam.
2.) You must notify me of your absence before the original exam is given to the class. In an extremely rare instance when this is not possible, I will expect you to contact me sometime that day. There are several ways to contact me, and these are outlined on the first page of your syllabus.
3.) Any excuse must be verified “officially” on paper. You will need to show me some sort of signed documentation from a doctor, judge, etc. before you can take a make-up. Notes from family members will not be accepted.
4.) The make-up exam must be taken within one week of the original exam date. You will need to arrange the make-up exam with me. Then, you will take it at the Testing Center on the ground floor of the Student Center. They do not require you to make an appointment, but they do require that you bring along a photo ID.
5.) Without exception, no more than ONE make-up exam will be given per student. If you have already taken a make-up exam at some point during the semester, you will not be permitted to take another.
WARNING: Assuming you meet all of the requirements for a make-up exam, you should also be aware of the following conditions.
6.) The make-up will probably be a more difficult exam than the original, and/or it will be graded at a 10% penalty to you.
7.) No make-up exams will be given in the last two weeks of classes. This refers to the final exam and any last chapter exams.
