When there is a substitute...

Text Only

Hopefully, there will be no need for a substitute instructor during the semester.  However, since the nature of such things is usually unpredictable, I would like to remind each of you of your responsibilities in this situation.  Many of you are already well aware of these responsibilities and I appreciate your maturity in that regard.  Still, I feel that it is worthwhile to post this for everyone to read.

Rock Valley College will only call on substitute instructors that are qualified to teach the course that they are being asked to substitute.  This will usually be a current full-time or part-time instructor who has had some experience teaching our course.  It is likely that the explanations of the substitute will differ from my explanations, since we all tend to explain thing differently.  Regardless, the substitute will be a competent and qualified instructor of the subject.

It is your responsibility to attend the class as you would if I was there.  It is also your responsibility to get as much out of that session as you would if I was there.

If there is anything at all about the explanations or examples of the substitute that you do not understand, it is then your responsibility to do something about that before the next class meeting.  It is your responsibility to check the class conference for any messages or instructions.  It is your responsibility to go through the section in the book and try the examples there.  Once you do that, it is your responsibility to ask questions about things you do not understand.  It is your responsibility to visit me during office ours to ask questions.  If my office hours are not convenient for you, it is your responsibility to (a) email your questions to me, (b) post them to our class conference, or (c) visit the Math Lab and/or Tutoring Center for help.

In short, it is your responsibility to clarify your misconceptions with what a substitute instructor covered before the next class meeting.  As adult college students you do not, under any circumstances, wait until the next class meeting and expect that everything will be taught to you all over again.  It won't be.

I apologize if this sounds somewhat harsh but, unfortunately, I have encountered enough students who take an immature, public high school approach to substitute teachers that it became neccessary to put this on the table.
